Setting up your first aquarium: a beginner's checklist
A healthy tank is mostly about patience and the right starter kit. Here is the short version.
Pick your tank size
Bigger is easier for beginners. A 20 gallon tank holds water conditions steadier than a tiny bowl, which means less stress for you and your fish.
The core kit
- Tank and lid
- Filter rated for your tank size
- Heater and thermometer for tropical fish
- Substrate, a few plants, and a hide or two
- Water conditioner and a test kit
Cycle before you add fish
Run the tank with water, filter, and conditioner for one to two weeks before adding fish. Test the water until ammonia and nitrite read zero.
